Advanced Biology Requirements

This class is offered to seniors who have taken chemistry.  Special permission can get you in as a junior. The areas covered include:

  • Ecology: study of interactions of organisms, the environment, and the impact of humans.
  • Populations.
  • Insects: characteristics and habitats.
  • Human anatomy and physiology: emphasis on muscle, digestive, skeletal, circulatory and nervous.
  • In depth dissection of the cat.
  • Insect collection and display.
  • On site water analysis at the Republican River.

    GENERAL CLASS REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING

  • Grading is based on lab work, daily work, projects, quizzes and tests. Participation grades are part of daily work.
  • Testing: After each section (1-3 chapters); 100 pts, primarily short answer and essay. Accounts for approximately 50% of quarter grade.
  • Quizzes: On reading asignements and basic terminology and processes.
  • Lab: Use time well, follow directions and follow safety procedures.
  • issed labs are made up on your own time. Talk to the instructor.
  • Missed tests: Make up the next. Exceptions based on length of absence.
  • If you are present for the chapter notes and discussion, but miss the review, you will take the test on the asigned day. If you are back in school the afternoon of the test day, you are to take the test during study hall or arrange a time before the next class period.
  • Late Assignments: Accepted with a good excuse (eg. your house burned down the night before).. Loss of 20% per day. After one week, you will receive a zero.
  • Daily assignments, quizzes, and lab activities will be graded on a point basis.
  • Notebooks: Have one large enough for notes (2-4 pages per day) and activity write-ups. Tests are primarily taken from notes.
  • Cheating: Zero for the work involved and a call to you parents. The principal will also be informed. See student handbook.
  • Behavior: If you behavior IS NOT appropriate and interferes with the learning process, you will be asked to leave the room and detention will be given. Dentention is with me BEFORE school in the morning.
  • Lowest grade dropped each quarter (does not include major project grades).
  • Bonus work: is available; listen and/or ask.
  • Have access to colored pencils.
  • I will check over you notes for contend anytime. Arrange a time.
  • Cat dissection (MEOW): Properly dissect muscle, digestive and circulatory structures
  • Collect, identify and properly present 15 different insects
  • Participate in water quality collection and analysis (Republican River)
  • Participate in field trip to the UNK Human Performance Lab
