Historical Fiction--- a story based on real places, real events, and real people from the past.  Conversations of characters in historical fiction did not really happen. They are based on happenings that could have happened at that time.

Click on the link below to see a list of historical fiction books. See if you have read any of these:

Autobiography ---a true story that an author writes about his/her life, such as the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.

Biography---A book about a person written by some other person.

Informational Article--- a short non-fiction story with facts that is read for the purpose of learning something.  An example of this would be a TIME FOR KIDS articles and New True Books.

Poetry/rhyme---poems; writings usually with short lines that have rhythm and may have rhyme; has language that affects your emotions and imagination.

Fable-- a short moral story that teaches a lesson (often with animal characters that talk and have both human and animal traits).

Tall tale--- an unusual story that uses a lot of exaggeration.
Great tall tales story books by Steven Kellogg: Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, Swamp Angel, Johnny Appleseed, and Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett.

Fairy tales---  Fairy tales often begin with "Once upon a time"... they are magical
fictional (made-up, fantasy) stories for young children that features events, characters, and/or settings that are not found in real-life experience.
Folk tales---a legend (story) passed down from generation to generation.  It usually explains why something happened. For example: Gluskabe and the Snow Bird explains how a skunk  got its two white stripes.
Realistic Fiction---stories with real life characters dealing with real life problems. The action and setting of the story take place in the present time. The situations are true or could be true, but the characters are usually made up. Sometimes realistic fiction includes "real people" characters who have actually lived. The events that take place in realistic fiction happen only in real life.

Journaling---a form of writing that is usually dated. An example of journaling would be like writing in a diary. Events of the day are written down for purposes of enjoyment and later retrieval of personal events and facts. Many people keep journals when they travel and go on trips.

Personal Narrative---a true, short story written about one event in your life.

Science Fiction---A story based on fictional, scientific possibilities.

      • This fiction deals with the influence of real or imagined science on society or individuals.
