Science Benchmark (Alligned to Science 5.5.1) Earth materials include rocks, soils, water, and gases. Rock
is composed of minerals. Earth materials change over time from
one form to another. These changes require energy. Erosion is
the movement of materials and weathering is the breakage of
bedrock and larger rocks into smaller rocks and soil materials.
Soil is continually being formed from weathered rock and plant
remains. Soil contains many living organisms. Plants generally
get water and minerals from soil.

MORE ON EROSION:
Title: Erosion
Description: Erosion
is happening all around us. Even though you may not recognize it, the
forces of erosion are constantly shaping our planet. Learn more about
erosion, investigate, and describe how erosion is affecting the earth
in your neighborhood.

Title: How Does the Rain Shape the Earth?
Description: How
does rain shape the earth? To see erosion in action, try this simple
science lab. Can you predict what will happen to the dirt after you
pour the water over it?

Natural Disasters: Most natural disasters have an effect on the
earth's surface. Rock slides, erupting volcanoes, tidal waves and floods all
affect the shape of the land. Mountains are continually being built up and
eroded down in the slow rock cycle. Disasters are a small part of this cycle but
they are of interest to us because they effect us - their impact is immediate.
